Big News for Davis Love III

I'm happy to report that Davis Love III has been nominated the 2012 Ryder Cup captain. This was taken for a recent Polo Ralph Lauren ad campaign. This actual shot was not used but was one of my favorites. Johnny Caruso went all the way with the retro hair for this one. Davis loved it.... I think. He sort of went along with what ever we wanted. I think that explains why he's such an amazing golfer.

Hi Tim,

I'm 16 years old and studying photography at my school in England, UK. I discovered your site whilst doing research for my coursework. I love all of your work, especially the landscapes. However, I am very fond of doing portrait photography and I adore the shot of Harry Connick Jnr!

I was just wondering if it was possible for you to give me some tips or pointers on how to get photos like you. I only have a typical Sony Cybershot camera at the moment, but currently looking for a more up-market one!

I think this is the photograph that you are referring to Ellie. Harry Connick Jr. is always a ball to photograph. This photo shoot was for his first big band Christmas CD "When my Heart finds Christmas"

Harry wanted a very "classic" cover so he flew us all to Mt. Hood, Oregon in August and we found this sweet little mountain cabin with a very cozy fireplace. After we finished I asked Harry if we could shoot outside around the cabin. We did this photograph in the bath tub and a whole lot of other photographs I really love. He used one of them as a huge poster for promoting the CD.

My advice to you Ellie, is find people that interest you to photograph. Then find a place to photograph that has simple backgrounds and beautiful light. Sometimes less light is better but that's my opinion. So everyday you're looking around your life for these people and places. You could use your Sony Cybershot to catalog these ideas. Not that it really matters but I do suggest you get a slr camera that takes interchangeable lenses so you could really control your focus, f stops, and shutter speeds. The other nice thing about an slr is being able to get your eye right in the view finder and work that composition and different angles on a persons face. You have all these decisions to make and that's what makes it your photo. And remember that photographs are like snowflakes... the elements make each one unique!

I was recently asked to do a portrait of the soon to be really famous Novogratz family of 9. The process of the portrait was to be filmed for their new Bravo Reality show airing next year sometime. Bob and Courtney, the design team behind Sixx Design and their seven kids, were open to just about any of my crazy ideas. I was setting this shot up on the bed to be from above and suddenly was on the floor shooting their feet and thinking about how many shoes they have to buy. Specially for Wolfie the awesome 12 year old basketball star seen above.

I was working in East Hampton and staying at The Hedges Inn, a Hampton's landmark. Waking up a little too early I left the inn to find some coffee. I wouldn't normally take my camera but it was just sunrise and really a beautiful morning. Right outside the inn there was row of hedges that had connected on the top to form a tunnel. The light was sneaking through since it was a little early in the spring for leaves to have grown. What was crazy is that as soon as I lifted the camera the deer entered at the end of the tunnel. It was kind of "cue the deer". Taken with my Leica R8 and a 35mm lens. Kodak Portra 400 scanned and converted to a sepia tone.

I thought this was fitting as my first post. I was fortunate enough to be asked to do a CD cover for one of my favorite jazz musicians Jack Dejohnette. This was actually a New Age CD designed for his wife Lydia to use in her massage therapy. Exactly one hour long. The one requirement he had was to use his daughter Farah, who is an amazing horse trainer, in the photo. I photographed her with with my old Polaroid 195 scanned the negative from the Polaroid and combined it with a water refraction photo that existed in my archives. Gave it a blue tone. He loved it and didn't change a thing. The CD was nominated last year for a Grammy. BTW his new CD Peacetime was nominated this year and won!
